About Quaker Lake Wildlife Management Area

Quaker Lake Wildlife Management Area (WMA) is located in Coldspring, Cattaraugus County, within the bounds of Allegany State Park in western New York. Spanning several hundred acres around Quaker Lake, this area is managed by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation primarily to protect wildlife habitat and support recreational activities. The landscape includes mixed hardwood forests, wetlands, and open water, providing important ecosystems for a wide variety of birds, mammals, reptiles, and aquatic species. Quaker Lake itself is a glacial lake offering reliable fishing opportunities for species such as largemouth bass, northern pike, and panfish. Visitors to the area enjoy hiking trails that follow both the shoreline and forested uplands, making it a prime spot for birdwatching, hunting in season, and photography. Unlike more developed areas of Allegany State Park, the Quaker Lake WMA remains less crowded, allowing peaceful immersion in nature. Winter activities include snowshoeing and cross-country skiing when snow permits. Notable landmarks include the lake itself and the adjacent wetlands, which serve as critical breeding grounds for amphibians and migratory birds. The area’s history ties to early conservation efforts in New York State to protect regional aquatic habitats and upland forests amid expanding recreational use. Quaker Lake WMA appeals to outdoor enthusiasts seeking a quiet, wildlife-abundant alternative within a large protected park setting.
